How the dates are worked out
- Registering your address, and joining National Health Insurance and the national pension if your employer does not enroll you, are due within 14 days of moving in.
- Resident tax is charged by the city you live in on January 1 on the previous year's income, so it starts in June of the year after you arrive.
- The year-end adjustment is shown in November and the tax return deadline on March 15, for each year until you leave (or for 3 years).
- After 5 years in Japan you are no longer a non-permanent resident, so income from abroad becomes taxable.
- If you plan to leave, the moving-out notification, your residence card and the 2-year limit for the pension refund are added.
The dates are general rules. Your city, school or employer may set their own dates, so follow their letters when they arrive. For the steps in more detail, see Moving to Japan and Leaving Japan.
Frequently asked questions
Is my information sent anywhere?
No. The checklist is built in your browser, and your answers and ticks are saved only in this browser. The calendar file is created on your device.
How do I add the dates to Google Calendar or my iPhone?
Tap “Add dates to my calendar” to download an .ics file. On an iPhone, open it to add the events. For Google Calendar, use Settings > Import & export on a computer and choose the file.
I arrived a while ago. Is it too late?
Deadlines that have passed are marked. Most can still be done: register or join insurance as soon as possible, and ask your city office if you missed a deadline.
