Reading a Japanese job offer

  • Nenshū (年収) is the gross annual salary, including bonuses. Gekkyū (月給) is the gross monthly salary. If a bonus is described as, say, "4 months", it is 4 times the monthly salary per year, usually paid in summer and winter.
  • Many offers include fixed overtime pay (minashi zangyō) for a set number of hours. It is part of the monthly salary, so check how much of it is base pay.
  • Commuting allowance is usually paid on top and is tax-free up to a limit, but it counts toward the salary used for social insurance, so premiums rise slightly.

Why your first year is different

Resident tax is charged on the previous year's income, so in your first year in Japan it is usually zero and your take-home pay is higher. Tick First year in Japan to see the salary you need for that year, but plan with it off: from June of your second year about 10% of your taxable income goes to resident tax. See why resident tax starts in your second year.

Assumptions

  • You are an employee on Kyokai Kenpo health insurance, with your prefecture's rate for FY2026 and 2026 tax rules.
  • No spouse or dependent deductions. The gross monthly salary is searched in steps of ¥100.
  • Bonuses are paid in two equal parts. For monthly take-home, the calculation assumes no bonus.
