Working in Japan: Your Yearly Money Calendar
Bonuses, furusato nozei, the year-end adjustment, side jobs and when you need a tax return.
1. Summer and winter bonuses
Bonuses have social insurance and income tax deducted at a different rate from your monthly salary, but no resident tax.
2. By December 31: furusato nozei
Donating to local governments by December 31 turns most of the donation into a tax reduction, with gifts in return. Check your limit first.
3. November to December: year-end adjustment
Your employer settles your income tax for the year. Hand in the forms for insurance premiums and dependents to get the full refund in December.
4. February to March: a tax return if you need one
File a tax return by March 15 if you have side income over ¥200,000, medical costs over ¥100,000, or another reason. A side job also has to fit your residence status.
